Rhode Islandにある街から来た
旧世界のヨーロッパの雰囲気が
町のあちこちに感じられる
そういう場所が故郷だ
あいつは夢と希望を荷物に詰めて
そこから逃げるようにしてやってきた
あいつのオヤジ（先祖）が海を渡って
昔この国に来たみたいに

その場所のウワサをあいつは聞いた
そこではみんなが幸せに暮らしてるって
先住民がどんな暮らしをして
どんなにその土地を大切にしてるか
そのウワサは教えてくれた
それであちこちから色んなヤツが
ロッキー山脈（the Great Divide）へとやってきた
身を立てたいと思うヤツも
人目をはばかる素性のヤツも

人でごった返すバーの奥では
みんなが一時の安らぎを求めてる
こんなセリフが聞こえてくる
みんなに教えたくてたまらない
あそこがどんなにいい場所なのか
みんな「楽園」だって言ってたよ
なのにどうしてなんだろう？
あの聖なる山々が
貶め（おとしめ）られてしまってるのに　**
町は浮かれているなんて

やがて不吉な冷たい風が吹いてきた
砂漠を越え
海岸沿いの渓谷を抜けて
マリブにまで吹きこんだ
ルックスのいいヤツらが芝居して　***
「（権）力」と「電力」がなきゃダメな場所だ　****　
それがなきゃネオンの輝く
派手な世界が作れない
そういうヤツらがやらせたんだよ

どこかから
金持ち連中がやってきて
土地を勝手に荒らしていったのに
ちっともお咎めなしだった
不格好な箱（家）をいくつも並べたのに
信じられないよ
それを買うヤツがいて
そこを「楽園」と呼んだんだ
それに相応しい場所だからって
だけどそこでそいつらが見たものは
（大気汚染で）霞んだ太陽が *****
海に沈んでく様子だった

そんなのはすっかり捨ててしまって
ハワイのラハイナを目指して船出してもいい
宣教師たちも昔そうしたんだから
ヤツらネオンサインまで持ってきやがった
「神は来る」ってヤツだ
そうやって白人の不満をなだめながら
白人の支配する世界を作り上げた

だけどそんな遠大な計画を一体誰が決めるんだ？
どこまでが人様のものでどこからが自分のものなんだ？
だってもうこの世には「新天地」なんかないんだぞ
だったら今いるこの場所を
「新天地」にするしかないじゃないか

大体自分達だって
底なしの欲望を満たすために
人でなしの行為を正当化してる
そうなる運命だったんだとか
神の思し召しとか言いながら

ヤツらはまだそこにいる
日曜の朝
（教会の）椅子から立ち上がり
讃美歌を歌いながら
天国はこういうところだと
まわりの人間に説いている
そこは「楽園」だって言ってるが
わからないね
ある場所を「楽園」だと言いながら
取り返しがつかないくらい
そこを荒らしていったのに

* ProvidenceはRhode Island州の州都で，アメリカの最初の入植地のひとつですが，この曲はアメリカの歴史，そしてそれに伴う先住民文化の破壊と環境破壊を描いているような気がします。最初の連が西への領土拡大（18世紀後半～19世紀前半），次が西部開拓（19世紀後半），次がゴールド・ラッシュ（19世紀後半）**，その次がハリウッド時代（20世紀）***，宅地開発，キリスト教の支配です。
